Thank you. Thank you, President Chen, Chairmen Ren, Vice President Chi, Vice Minister Wei. We are delighted to be here today with a very large American delegation, including the First Lady and our daughter, who is a student at Stanford, one of the schools with which Beijing University has a relationship. We have six members of the United States Congress; the Secretary of State; Secretary of Commerce; the Secretary of Agriculture; the Chairman of our Council of Economic Advisors; Senator Sasser, our Ambassador; the National Security Advisor and my Chief of Staff, among others. I say that to illustrate the importance that the United States places on our relationship with China.
I would like to begin by congratulating all of you, the students, the faculty, the administrators, on celebrating the centennial year of your university. Gongxi, Beida. (Applause.)
As I'm sure all of you know, this campus was once home to Yenching University which was founded by American missionaries. Many of its wonderful buildings were designed by an American architect. Thousands of Americans students and professors have come here to study and teach. We feel a special kinship with you.
I am, however, grateful that this day is different in one important respect from another important occasion 79 years ago. In June of 1919, the first president of Yenching University, John Leighton Stuart, was set to deliver the very first commencement address on these very grounds. At the appointed hour, he appeared, but no students appeared. They were all out leading the May 4th Movement for China's political and cultural renewal. When I read this, I hoped that when I walked into the auditorium today, someone would be sitting here. And I thank you for being here, very much. (Applause.)
Over the last 100 years, this university has grown to more than 20,000 students. Your graduates are spread throughout China and around the world. You have built the largest university library in all of Asia. Last year, 20 percent of your graduates went abroad to study, including half of your math and science majors. And in this anniversary year, more than a million people in China, Asia, and beyond have logged on to your web site. At the dawn of a new century, this university is leading China into the future.
I come here today to talk to you, the next generation of China's leaders, about the critical importance to your future of building a strong partnership between China and the United States.
The American people deeply admire China for its thousands of years of contributions to culture and religion, to philosophy and the arts, to science and technology. We remember well our strong partnership in World War II. Now we see China at a moment in history when your glorious past is matched by your present sweeping transformation and the even greater promise of your future.
Just three decades ago, China was virtually shut off from the world. Now, China is a member of more than 1,000 international organizations -- enterprises that affect everything from air travel to agricultural development. You have opened your nation to trade and investment on a large scale. Today, 40,000 young Chinese study in the United States, with hundreds of thousands more learning in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

My name is Hob. I am an -------
I am very happy to participate in this English Summer Program because it helps me to improve my oral English.
Each day I arrive early for class; and sit in the first row which is nearest to the teacher so that I can hear the teacher clearly.
I have attended every class, not missed a single one, only because I cherish this opportunity to learn to speak English well.
Our teacher is a wonderful teacher. She speaks English slowly and clearly so that we can easily understand her. She tries hard to help us with pronunciation, intonation and rhythm and teaches us to speak English smoothly. She helps everyone with every difficult sound. She tells us stories and teaches us life skills, which will be useful to us in the future. She is very kind to us and we all love her.
In the beginning, many of our students were shy about standing up in front of the class to speak English, but with the help of our teacher; and with the encouragement of our teacher every one of our class can now stands up and speak English loudly.
Our teacher seems not to be an expert on languages. She does not tell us that the word "goodbye" originally means: ’god be with you’ or "god bless you" when we are talking about the basic expressions of saying goodbye. She does not tell us such things. She only teaches us every day English to help us to communicate with others. And that is just what I needed. So, this program has been very helpful to me. I hope there will be more such programs in the future so that many more people can benefit from it.
Now, I have a dream!
My dream is that one day I can go to America for a Chinese Summer program to teach Americans to speak Chinese and tell them about China.
My dream is that Chinese and Americans understand each other better, will be good friends forever!

Ladies and Gentlemen
I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening because I have some -- some very sad news for all of you -- Could you lower those signs please? -- I have some very sad news for all of you and I think sad news for all of our fellow citizens and people who love peace all over the world; and that is that Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in Memphis Tennessee.
Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day in this difficult time for the United States it's perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who are black -- considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people who were responsible -- you can be filled with bitterness and with hatred and a desire for revenge.
We can move in that direction as a country in greater polarization -- black people amongst blacks and white amongst whites filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort as Martin Luther King did to understand and to comprehend and replace that violence that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land with an effort to understand compassion and love.
For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act against all white people I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed but he was killed by a white man.
But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make an effort to understand to get beyond or go beyond these rather difficult times.
My favorite poem my -- my favorite poet was Aeschylus. And he once wrote:
Even in our sleep pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart
until in our own despair
against our will comes wisdom
through the awful grace of God.
What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness but is love and wisdom and compassion toward one another and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country whether they be white or whether they be black.
So I ask you tonight to return home to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King -- yeah it's true -- but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country which all of us love -- a prayer for understanding and that compassion of which I spoke.
We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We've had difficult times in the past but we -- and we will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; and it's not the end of disorder.
But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together want to improve the quality of our life and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land.
And let's dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world. Let us dedicate ourselves to that and say a prayer for our country and for our people.

Kipling said:"East is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!" But now, a century later, they have met.
They have met in business. They have met in education. They have met in the arts. Some people will argue that these meetings will leave us with a choice between east and west, but I believe that the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. We can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. We can enjoy the best of both worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.
I love Beijing and Hennan opera because it always reminds me of who I am. But I am also a fan of pop music, especially English songs. So I have combined eastern melody with western language. It is called western henna opera.
When two cultures meet, there may be things in one culture, which do not fit into the tradition of the other. When this happens, we need to learn to understand and respect the customs of another culture. Then there are certain things some people may not like. To this, I will say, if you do not like it, please try to tolerate it. To learn to tolerate what you personally don’t like is a great virtue at a time when different cultures mix and merge. Before us, there are two rivers, eastern and western cultures. At present, they may run in different courses. But eventually, they will converge into the vast sea of human culture.
Right now, I can see peoples of eastern and western cultures, standing side by side, singing the Olympic theme song: we are hand in hand, heart to heart, together we will shape a beautiful tomorrow! Thank you!

能聽懂他人比較純正的英語,不僅是英語考試的需要,也是同學(xué)們未來步入社會(huì),施展才能所必需的技能。我們平時(shí)的聽力訓(xùn)練不僅僅是在訓(xùn)練你的英語聽力,其實(shí)它也是一種語感培養(yǎng),充足的英語聽力訓(xùn)練同時(shí)也會(huì)極大的有助于提高學(xué)習(xí)者的口語能力。鑒于同學(xué)們不可能自己抽出多少時(shí)間去聽英語歌曲、看英文電影或者直接用英語與人口頭交流,那么,充分利用好本年級統(tǒng)一的聽力訓(xùn)練時(shí)間就顯得尤其重要。在聽力訓(xùn)練中,既要學(xué)會(huì)抓關(guān)鍵詞,也要學(xué)會(huì)聽懂完整的句子;既要學(xué)會(huì)聽懂不同語音語調(diào)對語意的影響,也要學(xué)會(huì)聽懂有失去爆破和連讀現(xiàn)象的句子。有難度的聽力訓(xùn)練試題最好是能在過了一段時(shí)間后,等到忘記得差不多時(shí),有再聽一次的機(jī)會(huì)。所以在做聽力訓(xùn)練試題時(shí),我建議同學(xué)們一律用鉛筆做記號,對完答案、看完錄音文字材料后再把鉛筆痕跡察掉。
英語的口頭表達(dá)能力雖然不是我們考試的必備能力,但它卻是同學(xué)們將來所需要的最重要的,最實(shí)用的英語技能。一口流利的英語是每一個(gè)英語學(xué)習(xí)者所夢想達(dá)到的理想水平。重視口語能力的訓(xùn)練不僅對未來有重要意義,對提高同學(xué)們高中階段的英語水平也有非常重要的意義。說英語就是運(yùn)用英語。語言能力和語言知識,同許多其它能力和知識一樣,只有通過運(yùn)用,并且經(jīng)常運(yùn)用才會(huì)真正地學(xué)到手,學(xué)到家。英語是一門語言。語言是聽出來的,是經(jīng)過不斷模仿后才能說出來的。高中生的英語口語能力要求,除了一般日常交際應(yīng)答以外,還應(yīng)該具備能連續(xù)表達(dá)含五個(gè)以上的句子。練就一口流暢的英語口語需要同學(xué)們抓住三個(gè)機(jī)會(huì):一是課堂上老師為同學(xué)們提供的開口機(jī)會(huì)。二是課前演講或者值日報(bào)告的機(jī)會(huì)。三是早讀是個(gè)好機(jī)會(huì)。早讀不應(yīng)該總是停留在背單詞、背課文這樣的簡單勞動(dòng)中。單詞不是用來背誦的。朗讀單詞的目的是要把單詞的發(fā)音讀準(zhǔn),并且能上口,讀起來不勉強(qiáng),不繞口。課文也不是用來背誦的。熟讀課文是為了加深理解,鞏固詞匯知識和語法知識。既然口語能力那么重要,同學(xué)們不妨把背誦或者復(fù)述課文當(dāng)成是口語表達(dá)或者演講的準(zhǔn)備呢?換句話說,把課文材料準(zhǔn)備得再熟悉不過以后,來一次演講展示,那且不美哉!真正的高英語水平絕不是看書看出來的,也不是做習(xí)題能做出來的,更不是聽老師講課能聽出來的。早讀期間通過不斷模仿,放聲吼叫,反復(fù)實(shí)踐,你一定能快速提高自己的口語表達(dá)能力。
英語短文閱讀的重要性不僅表現(xiàn)在高中英語考試中它的份量最大,而且還表現(xiàn)在英語短文是英語詞匯知識和語法知識的載體方面。詞匯量的擴(kuò)大、詞匯知識的豐富和句子表達(dá)的多樣性光靠死記硬背是無法也不可能實(shí)現(xiàn)的。擴(kuò)大詞匯量、豐富自己的詞匯知識和地道完美的表達(dá)自己只有依靠優(yōu)良的閱讀習(xí)慣。教材課文是精讀材料,需要同學(xué)們讀熟讀透,直至能開口娓娓道來為止。課外閱讀又叫泛讀。高中英語新課標(biāo)教材對高中前八個(gè)模塊的學(xué)習(xí)有一個(gè)要求:課外閱讀要完成30萬單詞的閱讀量。也就是說:同學(xué)們需要每天有500到700個(gè)單詞量的閱讀。課外閱讀也是運(yùn)用語言的一種必不可少的形式。課外閱讀不能停留在完成幾道閱讀理解試題或者完形填空試題。關(guān)鍵在盡量弄懂文章中的每一句話含義、長難句的結(jié)構(gòu)。留意你還不很熟悉的詞匯、詞匯知識和語法知識。還要去認(rèn)真體會(huì)不同的英語句子在表達(dá)上的精確性。千萬不要在一些你還不認(rèn)識的,拼寫怪誕,發(fā)音困難的生僻詞匯上浪費(fèi)時(shí)間和精力。
閱讀能力,除詞匯量大小以外,還包含閱讀速度、長難句理解、和把握主題大意的能力。要會(huì)快速閱讀,同學(xué)們必須學(xué)會(huì)一些閱讀的技能:如:skimming(跳讀)、scanning(掃讀)和digesting(研讀)。Skimming和scanning就是根據(jù)閱讀任務(wù)在文中查找相關(guān)信息。Digesting主要是用來理解長難句、把握主題大意和作者意圖以及猜測詞義的技術(shù)。不僅要研讀長難句結(jié)構(gòu),也還需要研讀邏輯關(guān)系。
流暢的短文表達(dá)能力在很大程度上依賴于你的詞匯量、詞匯知識和句法知識。它們的積累在于平時(shí)的聽、說和讀的活動(dòng)。寫作表達(dá)能力中,你的英語句式的結(jié)構(gòu)思維能力或者英語習(xí)慣思維能力會(huì)對表達(dá)能力有重要影響。這就需要同學(xué)們平時(shí)養(yǎng)成一個(gè)良好習(xí)慣:那就是總是試圖用英語來表達(dá)出你眼睛所看到的,耳朵能聽到的,身體能感受到的和你思想能想到的。除此之外,一篇優(yōu)秀的短文還少不了三個(gè)要素:即結(jié)構(gòu),內(nèi)容和語言。
一片結(jié)構(gòu)完美的英文短文,尤其是說明文和議論文,往往有一個(gè)比較完優(yōu)美的,誘人深入閱讀的開頭語。主題句是可從開頭語中自然而然過度而來。你所程述的觀點(diǎn),一般都要用事實(shí)做論證,或者用具體方式方法來支持。巧妙的結(jié)論句往往能使文章錦上添花。
內(nèi)容需要真實(shí),合乎情理,能讓人信服。文中不要有與主題無關(guān)的'內(nèi)容。
語言要盡可能是地道的,去漢語化的英語。要經(jīng)常套用自己在閱讀中、在課堂上學(xué)來句子結(jié)構(gòu)去表達(dá)自己。要敢于嘗試用比較復(fù)雜的句子結(jié)構(gòu)和比較高級的詞匯來使文章進(jìn)一步美化。
聽所讀寫四大技能并不是各自孤立的,也是相互作用和相互制約的。如果平時(shí),只注重某一項(xiàng)技能的學(xué)習(xí)和訓(xùn)練,那是不可能成為一位真正的英語強(qiáng)手的。
任何一門學(xué)科都需要踏實(shí)的學(xué)習(xí)作風(fēng)。外語也不例外。學(xué)外語的實(shí)主要表現(xiàn)在以下幾個(gè)方面:
一、落實(shí)詞匯、詞匯知識和特殊句式的積累。落實(shí)詞匯和詞匯知識并不是反復(fù)背記詞匯表中的單詞。落實(shí)詞匯、詞匯知識以及特殊句式的最好辦法是先探究后運(yùn)用。一個(gè)詞匯在經(jīng)過七到八次在不同時(shí)間和不同的語境中運(yùn)用后,它就是你的了。詞匯知識和特殊句式也是一樣。寫作是運(yùn)用,造句是運(yùn)用,閱讀,傾聽和與他人用英語交流也是運(yùn)用。借助詞典進(jìn)行造句練習(xí),在造句中運(yùn)用新學(xué)的詞匯不失為一種行之有效的簡單易行的方式。
二、落實(shí)課外閱讀。每天堅(jiān)持花半小時(shí)閱讀一兩篇短文。一要真正讀懂。二要留意詞匯運(yùn)用。
三、落實(shí)早自習(xí)精讀。每次有硬指標(biāo),死任務(wù)。
四、落實(shí)課內(nèi)課外書面作業(yè)。簡單的完成老師布置的作業(yè)量并不是落實(shí)。書面作業(yè)質(zhì)的落實(shí)必須是在真正懂了、記住了的基礎(chǔ)上又快又好的獨(dú)立的、閉卷式的完成書面作業(yè)。對發(fā)現(xiàn)的漏洞和缺陷要采取補(bǔ)救措施。
五、落實(shí)自主探究的學(xué)習(xí)能力培養(yǎng)。學(xué)習(xí)中缺乏自主探究,不善于利用團(tuán)隊(duì)合作和與老師溝通是很多高中生在學(xué)習(xí)中存在的一種普遍想象。老師不是保姆,老師不可能把英語的詞匯知識和英語的四大能力烹制成一道道佳肴后,一口一口地喂進(jìn)學(xué)生的口中。老師的探究代替不了學(xué)生的探究。學(xué)習(xí)能力的培養(yǎng)主要是探究能力的培養(yǎng)。學(xué)會(huì)了探究,你才會(huì)在知識的大海中暢游。學(xué)會(huì)了探究,你才會(huì)成為終身學(xué)習(xí)者。英語學(xué)科的探究應(yīng)該表現(xiàn)在對某一特定詞匯在文中、在句中的用法和含義的探究,對長難句結(jié)構(gòu)和含義的探究,對相關(guān)知識關(guān)聯(lián)的探究,對作者意圖、主題大意的探究,當(dāng)然也包含對學(xué)法的探究。要探究知識,要有工具(詞典以及各種手冊等)的幫助,更要有團(tuán)隊(duì)的合作,還要有老師的幫助。團(tuán)隊(duì)合作可以讓你取他人之長補(bǔ)自己之短,還可以集思廣益,產(chǎn)生思想火花。常與老師溝通是可以使你更容易發(fā)現(xiàn)前進(jìn)的方向,少走彎路。
總而言之,英語學(xué)習(xí)需要同學(xué)們從聽說讀寫四大技能方面養(yǎng)成良好的學(xué)習(xí)習(xí)慣,堅(jiān)持語言知識積累、精讀、泛讀、課內(nèi)課外作業(yè)和自主探究五個(gè)方面的腳踏實(shí)地地勤奮努力,就能夠比較輕松地完成高中英語的學(xué)習(xí),為自己將來的遠(yuǎn)大理想奠定堅(jiān)實(shí)的外語基礎(chǔ)。
